Sarah Palin, Feminism, and the Left

sarah_palin_I am not one to chime in on the gossip side of the political scene.  I must speak slightly about the gossip here for I see something I oppose in this.  I am speaking of Sarah Palin, and all the news over her in the last year.  The Left claims to be pro feminist and pro woman, yet they have shown otherwise with Sarah Palin.  She is anything but a feminist, and anything but a woman’s right advocate.  Yet, amidst this I see attacks from the left on her “motherly” skills with her children, comments on her hair and dress.  How is attacking a woman on these grounds constantly not displaying sexual stereotypes?

Did any male candidate get attention for what suit he wore? Did any of the male candidates get remarks about grooming habbits like she did with her lipstick?  You den of leftist hypocrates.  You are no more for sexual equality than George Bush was.  This is just a spin for personal gain.  Your loose your morals at the door.

I am a libertarian, I support many aspects and consepts in feminism.  I see none of that displayed here in the Treatment of female public officials.  We have work to do.  I disagree with her politics.  I did not vote for her ticket.  I will not stoop to those patriarchial sexist attacks.  She put up with a great deal of sexism and everyone turns the cheek because she was not a feminist herself.

Update: There seems to be a group of Feminists I am seeing that is calling out the sexist reporting.  I found this on twitter first under the tag #PalinSexism.  Forgive me for lumping everyone into the sexist category in regards to handling the way She is being handled in the media.

Toys to set tills jingling.(Features)

Daily Mail (London) October 27, 2011 Byline: Eva Marie Gibney A DOG that poops, a Goth Barbie and a mini iPad are just some of the must-have toys tipped to sell out this Christmas.

Retailers made a list – and checked it twice – before yesterday publishing their top 12 of Kids’ Award playthings tested and voted for by the experts; a panel of children.

The toys were showcased at an event in London attended by the biggest names in the industry.

But parents, be warned – you might want to start saving now as prices on the wishlist range from [euro]22 all the way up to [euro]95.

The list will form the basis of most Santa letters this year – but cashstrapped parents seeking a budget option should look away.

The top 12 includes the Ninjago Fire Temple by LEGO, currently on sale at Smyths for [euro]94.99 and the pooping Doggie Doo, retailing at [euro]21.99, which teaches children to clean up after their pets.

The prices reflect state-of-the-art technology, with a child friendly iPad, called the LeapPad Explorer, priced at [euro]89.99. go to web site monster high wiki

The multi-functional learning tablet lets children hook up to a computer and download apps – much like the real thing. The VTech Kidizoom Twist camera, on sale for [euro]52 at Littlewoods Ireland, introduces children to the art of photo taking.

Sesame Street’s Lets Rock Elmo – a singing, music-making version of the popular TV character – will set you back [euro]67.49 at Smyths.

Girls, meanwhile, appear to be rebelling against the traditional Barbie doll and opting instead for a Goth range known as the Monster High fashion dolls.

Made by Mattel – the creators of Barbie – the dolls retail at around [euro]12 each, but without the accessories.

A hydration station for the Laguna character, priced at [euro]33.49 at Smyths, allows owners to ‘moisturise’ their dolls.

Also aimed at girls are the Fijit Friends, [euro]54.99 at Smyths, squishy interactive robots capable of chatting and dancing to music.

For the boys, the Star Wars Lightsaber is a hardy perennial but this time around, the price is a decidedly futuristic [euro]52 at Littlewoods Ireland. It features realistic lights and motionactivated battle sound effects. A spokesman for Hamleys in Ireland said that the wishlist tallied closely with top sellers at its Dundrum Town Centre store.

He said: ‘The Christmas rush hasn’t started yet but since September we have seen a spike in demand for toys like the LeapPad and the Doggie Doo.

‘The Monster High dolls and accessories are also a top seller because girls are just crazy about them.

‘They’re seen as a more adult, less traditional Barbie doll, even though they’re by the same maker. They have dyed hair and trendy Goth clothes. LEGO is always a guaranteed best-seller as well so we expect the new Ninjago Fire Temple to sell well.’ Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Toy Retailers Association which published the list, said the Doggie Doo ‘had gone down a storm’ with children at yesterday’s event. web site monster high wiki

She added: ‘Children of all ages just love it because you can click the dog’s lead to make it poop and then you have to scoop up after it three times in order to win the game.’ As well as the Kids’ Choice top 12, the TRA also announced its Mums’ Choice Awards, which went to the Imaginext Batcave, priced at [euro]59.99, and the Kidizoom Twist camera.

Don't confuse criticism with sexism. Everyone likes to believe they are less "ist" than the other. You are no different.

Thanks for drawing attention to the sexist attcks on Palin. It seems the right is not progressive in terms of the women's movement and the left is only concerned with sex-positive feminism (in terms of pro-porn=free speech) and radical abortion rights. Often, neither side reflects a genuine valuing of women and in the example you have shown, both can both be driven by masculine values and subtle misogyny. Politics often fall short of the feminist ideal. We shouldn't be surprised, considering just how much of the world's political powers are bound up in the patriarchy!
