The Afghan War: "Why and to What End?"

A Washington Post article today makes an account of a Marine Corps Captain, Matthew Hoh, who resigned his post in protest of the war in Afghanistan. He states:

“I have lost understanding of and confidence in the strategic purposes of the United States’ presence in Afghanistan…I have doubts and reservations about our current strategy and planned future strategy, but my resignation is based not upon how we are pursuing this war, but why and to what end.”

I find this story heartening. After 8 years, thousands of American soldiers dead or wounded, and hundreds of billions of dollars spent in Afghanistan, we have accomplished virtually nothing, and have in fact, made our political situation in the Middle East much worse. Unfortunately, our interventionist foreign policy will likely keep us there for another 8, or even 80, years. War is a great tool for controlling people, confiscating both their wealth and freedoms. I would like to see more military men and women stand up for America and her interests in the manner that Captain Hoh did. I do not blame our soldiers for America’s destructive foreign policy, but the simple fact remains that their compliance with it makes America’s pursuit of this type of interventionism possible, and with it, individual liberties in America are eroded away daily.

Cpt. Matthew Hoh is not alone there are those like Adam Kokesh out there. I have some odd mixed emotions on that. He was called the "first" in the Washington Post article. Will there be a second?

Winter Soldier? Is there such ting as a Winter Marine? If he were enlisted he would have been for a whole new world of hurt I feel.
