Home Building Expo shows latest innovations.

The Brownsville Herald (Brownsville, TX) July 16, 2006 Byline: Kevin Garcia Jul. 16–Homebuilders in Brownsville might not have thought of using a solar-powered attic fan to lower heating costs or using Styrofoam bricks to protect against hurricanes, but that kind of innovation is offered at the second annual Home Building Expo. The Expo, held at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College’s International Technology Education and Commerce campus on Saturday and today, invites vendors to an area often overlooked by companies. go to web site how to install a ceiling fan

“A lot of these shows are held in the Upper Valley, and we thought this would provide vendors in this area a chance to show their stuff,” said Martha Valdez, project coordinator. “We feel that there is a market for this in the Valley.” If a demand is shown in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Valdez said, more businesses will come to the area.

“I know there’s a market here,” said Kent Farmer, owner of Solar Specialty Products at The Power Store in San Antonio. “We got a lot of business from attending last year.” Selling everything from solar-powered golf carts to solar-powered home cooling systems, Farmer said area residents are interested in something new. “A lot of products save you money, and that’s important in this area,” he said.

That’s why several training seminars are held at the Expo, from how to install a ceiling fan to helping individuals with disabilities prepare for a hurricane. Several vendors kept the area’s weather concerns in mind when preparing their products. “We came here because people are interested in hurricane preparedness,” said Mary Sanchez, spokeswoman for Grid-Wall, a company that makes insulated concrete out of 85 percent recycled Styrofoam. “This (product) would be great for hurricanes because it can withstand 200-mile winds.” Last year, 1,800 people attended the event, with $1,500 in cash and door prizes worth $10,000 were given away. Similar amounts are available this year, and organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout. Vendors displayed everything from sports and safety equipment to material to weather-proof and pest-proof a house. “Your house is the biggest asset you have,” Valdez said. “And this is where the newest and latest products are shown.” Admittance to the Expo is $3 for adults, $1 for seniors and free to those 16 and under. Events run from noon to 4 p.m. today with seminars held throughout. For more information, call (956) 504-9863. here how to install a ceiling fan
