Films For Action | Join Me
I have been frequenting another site lately I wanted to bring to your attention. It is Films For Action. It seems to focus on political films mostly, but also has great content to read. I have posted a few Gonzo Times articles there. The founder of the site Tim Hjersted asked if we would be willing to post something here about the site, a task I was already thinking about doing. After the sale of Huffington Post some are trying to build it up as an alternative to Huffington Post. I came aware of this on twitter when I started seeing the hash tag #HuffPuff promoting new sites that offer an alternative to what Huffington Post has become and people like Chris Hedges at Truth Digg have begun to speak out against the sale. They have expressed a desire to reach out to the left-libertarian and anarchist audience in addition to their current audience.
We’re aiming to be an entry point for people new to all this alternative information as well as a resource for veteran activists to use to spread awareness and network with others of like-mind.
- Tim Hjersted
It’s a great place to interact, it offers options to post your own content, both original and re-posting of work from your blogs or sites. It has hundreds of great films focusing on a range of different radical topics.
This is my call to register on Films for Action and you can follow me (Punk Johnny Cash) here. Help submit content and check out other content people have contributed. Let’s use this tool to gather information as well as to inform others. So, get over there and join me on Films For Action. And if you really kick ass you can help us vote up Gonzo Times content too. I know they could use some help in building up more anarchist content, so read, watch and submit. This is a beginning of a great new online community. You can also follow them on facebook here.
Films For Action Launches Revamped Website, a “Learning Library for People Who Want to Change the World”
Lawrence, KS — After 12 months in development, Films For Action has launched its new website – a head-to-toe redesign that lays the foundation for a vibrant community-powered news site dedicated to inspiring positive social change. At the heart of the new site is a constantly growing learning library of over 200 documentaries and 500 short films that can be watched free online, daily independent news, and a practical “Take Action” section to help users find ways to make a positive impact.
“It’s probably the most comprehensive collection of videos dedicated to social change online,” says Tim Hjersted, co-founder and director for the project.
“With the overwhelming amount of junk-food-news and political gossip out there, people have really grown hungry for diverse, nutritious information. We’ve spent hundreds of hours looking for videos all over the internet so that we could catalog the best of these all in one place. After 3 years adding only the best gems, the website has become a treasure trove for people wanting to learn about what’s really going on in the world.”
Founded in 2006, Films For Action is a non-profit organization that works both on an international and local level to raise awareness of important social, environmental, and media-related issues not covered by the mainstream news. Locally, the group has organized dozens of documentary film screenings, bringing in crowds from 60 to 400 people. Many of the screenings have been used as a spring-board to launch action-oriented campaigns, including the opposition of a 2nd Wal-Mart coming to town, a street protest against the Iraq war led by Iraqi war veterans, and the introduction of a Peak Oil Resolution to the Lawrence city commission, which was successfully passed in 2008.
All and all, through the group’s website and its local city chapter efforts, the goal is to empower citizens with the information and perspectives necessary to help create a more just, sustainable, and democratic society.
The site has 42 special coverage areas, including activism, big media, corporations, climate change, community, human and animal rights, media literacy, economics, politics, peak oil, sustainability, permaculture, solutions, big ideas, vision, war & peace, and more.
