The American Tradition: Punk Johnny Cash Spoken Word

I am posting a spoken word piece I read at an open mic event on the 4th of July this year. I hope you all enjoy. I would love to hear some feedback and know what people think if you get a chance. I hope to do a better recording of it the future.

Thanks for letting me know about this! Feedback? Performance is great. I love bringing in Moloch as a sub-thread. Ending is very strong. If you decide to perform it (especially at a slam or spoken word event), edit it down + come up with a personal narrative, which brings in audience participation/investment without diluting the core message. The need for brevity is built into most slams (past 3 minutes, 10 seconds = penalty), which can help in the “editing is work and a pain in the ass” part of things. Let me know if you want to hear more. Good luck!

Maybe I can break it into two pieces. I have another one I am doing soon so I’m going to try and keep it at 3 min. Thanks. This was my first try, and that is helpful. Trimming down is something I’m trying on almost all my work now, so that’s a reassurance also.

Breaking it up could work; I remember there being a shift in tone somewhere around halfway through. What I usually do for my pieces that are polemics-heavy is find the core issue and push on it; sort of like “variations on a theme,” then edit out the stuff that’s saying the same thing in different ways. Glad the feedback was reassuring; would love to see what you come up with going forward. Thanks. :)

Not bad. I especially like the imagery of Jesus as Rambo.
